Custom and Unique Carvings

We produce a wide variety of carved items using a combination of traditional hand carving and modern machining, to produce a unique and beautiful item that is also as cost effective as possible. Such as our beautiful Door Frame Corner Blocks featuring ancient Green Men and Women, or our range of unique Australian Parrots based on the original designs by John Gould in the 1800's.

Sustainable Woodworking

“We fully embrace sustainability, and also practice a zero waste policy with re-use being an integral and valued component of our crafting process.”

The benefits re-use brings is innumerable, from reduced destruction of forestation and waste of salvageable materials, to the provenance the materials can bring to the end product.

Whilst re-use can be more labour intensive, we believe knowing part of the materials to produce your creation may for example have come from a late 1800’s Victorian era fireplace, an Edwardian period door from a house in Elsternwick, to the brass plates used to make our hinges that originally graced the entrance doors to the Palladium Theatre in Melbourne, adds an invaluable touch of history and unique charm to each creation!

The Ebonising process:

The rich dark colours of our ebonised products are obtained not by the use of coloured dyes or stains, but instead by the centuries old technique made from a simple mix of vinegar and iron filings that reacts with the natural tannins in the timber, very quickly developing a rich dark hue that is very eco-friendly and safe.

History:

Ebony for many centuries has been a highly prized decorative timber that was greatly over-exploited leading almost to the point of extinction in many of the major plantations, and is now a highly protected species that most countries have very strict import/export laws limiting, or stopping, its trade.

As ebony stock became scarcer and thus increasingly expensive, ebonising became a natural choice for many furniture and goods manufacturers, providing a natural alternative that produced very consistent results in tannin rich timbers, such as oaks, walnut, etc, and didn’t require the use of harsh or dangerous chemicals to produce a rich, ebony like finish.

With the aim towards a zero waste policy, we go out of our way to re-use as much reclaimed timber as possible. This can be from doors, furniture, or even in the case of our limited run of "Warana" Coat Hooks, part of a yacht!

And with a lot of these older reclaimed timbers, the grain and density can also be something magnificent to behold.

“I am inspired by the history of what I am working with”

Having been involved with woodworking in its many forms over the years, we have now moved away from working on larger projects, in order to focus on creating our own unique line of giftware ideal for any occasion.

The joy and gratitude from the person receiving one of our handcrafted or personalised creations, is a truly satisfying and soul enriching experience. Similarly, we find it extremely rewarding being able to apply a high degree of creativity and uniqueness in each of the smaller creations we design and make. To see a vision brought to reality knowing it will likely end up as a treasured gift to someone special, is food for the soul.

Our influences and inspiration are many, from the works and philosophies of creative geniuses such as William Morris, considered the father of the Arts & Crafts movement in the 19th century, and whose lasting influence helped it later evolve into the Art Nouveau period, to Charles and Henry Greene who revolutionised design and architecture in the early 1900’s, and of course Sam Maloof and George Nakashima among others in more modern times, all of whom endeavoured to elevate the status and work of the craftsman or artisan, and eschew the mass production of cheaply made and impersonal items not designed to last.
